I’d heard so many friends about the older reader Lumberjanes novels/comics so when I saw this Middle Grade book I was so excited to read it. I love the messages that these books have- for young girls and boys!

The book is full of unique magic and inventive fantasy that young readers love, from stinky unicorns to musical flowers. It had the perfect amount of whimsy to draw in even the most reluctant young readers and then hooks them in with a heartfelt and meaningful plot.

The story centres around the Roanoke cabin: April, Jo, Molly, Mal, Ripley. Each girl is unique and complex with her own passions and things that worry her. Despite this, the story is also a powerful example of how girls can be each other’s strength and support, even when they are different. The scientist in me loved how science was expertly woven in between the fantastical elements, because I think all children love science and using their imaginations.

Probably my favourite thing about this book is that it captured the wonder and joy of growing up and also captured how tumultuous these times can be. The girls ran into trouble and questioned their decisions, they felt torn by bonds of friendships and their own unique interests. Within the wonderful, quirky elements of the story Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! also expertly explored what it means to be a young girl.
