The Dragonriders of Pern

The Dragonriders of Pern

~ Anne McCaffrey

I started reading this series several years ago when it was recommended to my mom. Since we have a mutual love of dragons we read them together and ever since then I've been hooked! I absolutely love how intricate the world of Pern is, every last detail is planned and thought out. Its especially interesting to read the books from the beginning now that I know all the history of the world. And some things seem little when you first read it but a few books down the road it will all make sense! There are roughly 24 books in the series too which is great for someone who likes to read a lot!

Book One of the series. This introduces the main characters that carry through most of the series (that are the modern books, they aren't in the beginning history books). So this book introduce F'lar and Mnementh, F'nor and Canth, Lessa and Ramoth, the Masterharper, and the Oldtimers. It sets up the idea of the Threads and the Red Star, the great peril that Pern faces.  The complex relationship between the dragons and their people is established, as well as the hierarchy in the Weyr (the place where the dragonriders and their dragons live) and the varying levels of the dragon.

What I Thought

As I've said I really like these books but the first one can be a bit difficult to get through. Some of the details aren't set up until the later books so parts of it can be quite confusing. However there is some great details, storylines and characters that are introduced. As the books go on they get better as you learn more and more about the world and characters.
I would recommend this for anyone that loves dragon books, fantasy and doesn't mind that they don't get all the details right away!
